In 2000, I joined the Evanston Athletic Club and as part of the enrollment incentive I was given a free one-hour training session. I thought that would be a good idea. I could spend a single one hour with a trainer and learn the proper usage of the equipment and then “self-train” myself. The trainer assigned to me was Mike. Thirteen years later, I am still training with him. Mike has helped me change my life. I went from being an overweight, out-of-shape 48 year-old to a fit re-focused 61 year-old who has been running ultramarathons for 8 years. Mike continues to provide me with nutritional and exercise guidance that has changed my view of myself. He is a trainer who “practices what he preaches.” In addition to becoming a mentor, the biggest benefit of my working with Mike is that he has become a dear friend.”

I met Mike Kates about three years ago, shortly after being diagnosed with stage IV colon cancer. Since then, I’ve come to treasure our workout time. No matter how poorly I feel, come 7:30 Monday morning I make every effort to be in the car heading for the gym. I do this because I know I will leave in a better place than when I came. Mike has a sixth sense about just how hard to push. On good days he can push pretty darn hard. On not-so-good days, he instinctively knows how to dial it down and focus on ways to boost my energy. It amazes me just how much we’ve accomplished together.
Mike is a critical part of my support team. He is a master motivator and challenges me to be my best. He listens when I need to talk. He knows sometimes I can’t do it all and makes it okay. Most importantly, he treats me like an athlete, not a patient. I cannot begin to explain how important Mike’s compassion, support and drive are to my overall survival.
